Part One of this three-part Fact File covers the fighters of Boulton-Paul, Bristol, de Havilland and Gloster and includes, with one exception (the Westland Whirlwind), all the multi-seat and multi-engined fighters that reached operational service -the Defiant, Blenheim, Beaufighter and Mosquito. Also included in this volume are details of the RAFs first two jet fighters -the Gloster Meteor and the de Havilland Vampire.

The Meteor was in service -albeit on only a limited scale- before the war ended, whereas the vampire was still in the final stages of development, but both were to achieve large-scale production in post-war years. Both were products of the intensive design, development and production effort mounted by the British aircraft industry in the years immediately before and during the war to ensure that the RAF would continue to have fighting aircraft as good as the worlds best.
